Christine Hartung – Service Manager
I work for QLECS (Queensland Lutheran Early Childhood Services) as a Children’s Service Manager for 10 years and hold a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and a Diploma of Management. I have a strong focus on Kindergartens in my role with QLECS, overseeing all the Kindergarten Funding for 30 Approved Kindergarten programs.
As the Children’s Service Manager I work in a support role for the Service Director and Staff. I visit the service periodically and I am always available to the service and families.

Karen Mavin – Service Leader/Teacher
Karen has worked at St James Lutheran Kindergarten for the past 14 years. She has enjoyed working in a variety of roles such as teacher, teaching assistant, inclusion support and the last 4 years as Service Leader. Karen has a Diploma of Teaching in Primary Education and a Masters of Learning Innovation (Early Childhood); she has worked in Primary schools in Queensland, New South Wales and in a remote indigenous community in the Northern Territory. Karen has taught primary grades from Prep to Grade 7.
Karen has a passion for early childhood education where she believes that children learn best in a play based environment that is stimulating, supportive and where children and adults work together as co-learners. She also believes that all children are able to learn and strives to cater to each child’s individual needs.
Karen has presented at a conference about inclusion in mainstream schooling and has won a National award (in partnership) in 2019 for a having an inclusive environment. In 2016, she was a finalist in the top 100 teachers nominated in Australian Families.
On a personal note: Karen has been married for 27 years and has four children aged 18 to 24. Karen enjoys being active and working outside on her farm, where she raises cattle.
Mel Britt – Teacher
- Married for 19 years with 3 children Ella 14, Miah 12 and Kyden 8
- Bachelor of Education Early Childhood
- Working at St James Lutheran Community Kindergarten since 2011. Worked in the roles of Teaching Assistant, Relief Teacher, Inclusion Support Worker and currently Teacher.
- 10 years’ experience working in Primary schools before taking time off to have her family. During this leave she has also run her own tutoring business and worked for Play group QLD.
Mel is a very passionate and dedicated Early Childhood trained Educator whose love for teaching and learning is evident in her daily practises. She believes each child is unique, with their own talents and abilities. Fostering these talents and a love of learning in a play-based child centred program is certainly a privilege to be a part of.
Mel has had 18 years’ experience working with ASD and behavioural issues and has a strong interest in these areas in particular.

Lisa Veal – Teaching Assistant

- Working at St James Lutheran Community Kindergarten since 2008
- Lisa has worked in various educator roles through the years including Group Leader, Teaching Assistant, Teacher and Director
- Lisa has over 20 years’ experience working with young children
From a young age Lisa has always had a passion for working with young children. Lisa acknowledges that children are unique individuals with different capabilities, needs and strengths.
Lisa believes that play is a natural way through which young children learn, enhancing their holistic development. Through play children can explore their environment, take risks, express their ideas, feelings and interact with people.
Lisa is dedicated to creating a nurturing, challenging and stimulating environment that is developmentally appropriate, to encourage each child to become capable and confident learners.
On a personal note, Lisa has been married for 22 years and is blessed with two children Jessica 16 and Jordan 13. Lisa enjoys reading, going to the movies and spending quality time with family and friends.
Leanne Troost – Teaching Assistant

- Certificate 3 in Children Services 2004
Leanne has worked in Sessional Kindergarten since 2003, both as Inclusion Support and Teaching Assistant and begun her employment at St James in 2006. She is now celebrating 14 years at this wonderful centre.
Leanne loves working with children, particularly the kindergarten age group and enjoys the partnerships formed with students and families alike. Her practise are inspired by Reggio Emilia schools of Italy, which appreciates that each child has their own uniqueness and way of expression as they navigate the changing world.
She believes it is important to learn together through investigation, discussion and provocations. She believes that learning should be fun and a good laugh each day is a key to a happy life.
On the home front, Leanne has been married for 29 years and has 3 adult children. She also has a dog and 2 cats. When she is not at work she enjoys travelling and exploring the world.
Jenny Robinson – Teaching Assistant
- Diploma in Childcare and Education 1998
- Working at St James Lutheran Community Kindergarten since 2007
Jenny began her journey her at St James in 2007. Over the years she has worked as an assistant in both the Kindergarten and the Childcare. She has worked in the roles as a Relief Educator, Inclusion Support worker in both settings and is currently working as a Teaching Assistant.
Jenny is very passionate and loves working with young children. She believes that every child is unique and their differences should be respected. Jenny aims to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment so they can develop to their fullest potential. She believes that a patient nature and little sense of humour can help to ease the challenges that face us each and every day.
On a personal note, Jenny has been married for 20 years and two children, Hayley 18 years and Jayden 15 years. Together they enjoy going to the beach, particularly North Stradbroke Island. They are all actively involved members of the Point Lookout Surf Lifesaving Club. They enjoy the outdoors, especially time on their boat and spending quality time with family and friends.
